About the Bigha to Acre Converter
The bigha is one of the oldest land units in north and east India, and it is still how many families describe their land. The trouble is that it was never standardised nationally. Different kingdoms, revenue settlements and regions fixed their own sizes, so today a "bigha" can mean anything from about 6,800 to over 27,000 square feet depending on where you are.
That's why this converter asks for your state first. Here are the sizes we use:

These are the values most commonly used for each state, but within a state the local measure can still differ between districts, tehsils and even villages. For a sale deed, mutation, bank loan or court matter, always rely on the area recorded in your official land record (jamabandi, khatauni or 7/12 extract) or ask the patwari.

The formula we use

A farmer in Rajasthan owns 5 pucca bigha.
- Area = 5 × 27,225 = 1,36,125 sq ft.
- Acres = 1,36,125 ÷ 43,560 = 3.125 acres (1.265 hectare).
The same 5 bigha in West Bengal would be only 5 × 14,400 = 72,000 sq ft = 1.65 acres – almost half.
Things to keep in mind
- Local variation is real. If you know the exact size of a bigha in your village, divide your area in sq ft by 43,560 to get acres.
- Land records rule. Official records in many states are now kept in hectares or acres. Use this tool to understand a figure, not to replace the record.

Commonly used values range from about 6,804 sq ft (Uttarakhand) to 27,225 sq ft (Rajasthan pucca and Haryana). West Bengal and Assam use 14,400 sq ft.
What is the difference between pucca and kachha bigha?
In Rajasthan, the pucca bigha (27,225 sq ft or 3,025 gaj) is the standard revenue unit, while the kachha bigha (17,424 sq ft or 1,936 gaj) is a smaller local unit still used in some areas.
