Cow Weight Calculator

Estimate cow, heifer, bull or buffalo weight from heart girth and body length using the proven tape measurement method.

Enter your details

Pass the measuring tape all the way around the chest, just behind the front legs and withers, snug but not tight.

Measure in a straight line from the point of the shoulder joint to the pin bone (bony point near tail base).

Please note: This calculator provides a mathematical estimate based on the values entered. Recommended agricultural application rates can vary by crop, soil, product formulation, location and official agricultural guidance. Check the product label and local agricultural recommendations before application.

No livestock weighing scale? Measure your cow, heifer, bull or buffalo with a simple tailor's tape. Enter heart girth and body length to estimate live body weight in kilograms and pounds – essential for calculating dewormer doses, feed rations and fair cattle sale prices.

About the Cow Weight Calculator

Most dairy farmers do not have access to an animal weighbridge or platform scale. Yet knowing the approximate body weight of a cow or buffalo is essential for day-to-day decisions on the farm:

  • Medicine and deworming doses: Dewormers like albendazole and fenbendazole, antibiotics, and supplements are prescribed per 100 kg of body weight. Underdosing causes treatment failure and drug resistance; overdosing wastes money and risks toxicity.
  • Ration balancing: Daily dry matter intake (DMI) is directly proportional to animal body weight (typically 2.5% to 3.2% of body weight).
  • Fair pricing when buying or selling: Knowing live weight prevents being cheated by cattle traders at local pashu mandis.
  • Heifer growth monitoring: Ensuring heifers reach 250–300 kg before first artificial insemination (AI).

How to measure your animal accurately

  1. Stand the animal square on flat, level ground with its head upright in a natural position.
  2. Heart Girth (A): Place the tape around the animal's circumference directly behind the elbow and front legs, passing over the withers. Pull it snug so it compresses the hair coat but does not indent the skin. Read immediately after the animal exhales.
  3. Body Length (B): Measure the distance in a straight line from the point of the shoulder (anterior point of the greater tubercle of the humerus) to the pin bone (tuber ischii, the bony prominence beside the base of the tail).

How to use the Cow Weight Calculator

  1. 1 Measure the heart girth around the chest just behind the front legs with a tape.
  2. 2 Measure the body length from the shoulder point to the pin bone.
  3. 3 Choose whether you measured in centimetres (cm) or inches.
  4. 4 Press Calculate to view estimated weight in kg and lb, daily feed requirements, and dosage references.

The formula we use

In inches and pounds (Shaeffer's Formula):
Weight (lb) = Heart Girth (inches)² × Body Length (inches) ÷ 300

In centimetres and kilograms:
Weight (kg) = Heart Girth (cm)² × Body Length (cm) ÷ 10,838

Heart girth is squared in the formula, which means chest measurement has twice the influence of body length on total estimated weight. Take the girth measurement twice and average the reading for best accuracy.

Worked example

An adult Murrah crossbred buffalo has a measured heart girth of 180 cm and a body length of 150 cm:

  1. Girth squared = 180 × 180 = 32,400.
  2. Multiply by body length = 32,400 × 150 = 4,860,000.
  3. Divide by 10,838 = 4,860,000 ÷ 10,838 = 448.4 kg (about 988.6 lb).
  4. Daily dry matter intake = 448.4 × 2.8% = 12.6 kg DM/day.

Things to keep in mind

  • Pregnancy: Late-gestation animals carry 40–60 kg of fetus and fluid, so tape formulas may overestimate muscular/skeletal weight by 5–10%.
  • Body Condition: Very thin or emaciated animals may weigh slightly less than the formula indicates; obese animals may weigh slightly more.
  • Buffaloes: Field studies by ICAR and NDRI confirm Shaeffer's formula works reliably for Indian river buffaloes (Murrah, Nili-Ravi, Mehsana) as well as zebu cattle (Gir, Sahiwal, Red Sindhi, Tharparkar).

Frequently asked questions

How much does an average Indian cow or buffalo weigh?

Indigenous cows (Gir, Sahiwal, Kankrej) typically weigh 300–420 kg. Crossbred Holstein-Friesian (HF) or Jersey cows weigh 420–550 kg. Adult Murrah and Nili-Ravi buffaloes generally weigh 480–580 kg.

How accurate is the tape method compared to a scale?

When measured carefully on a calm animal standing square, tape estimation is generally within 5% to 8% of platform scale weight. Because heart girth is squared, an error of 2 cm in girth has a much larger effect than 2 cm in length.

Does this formula work for buffaloes and bulls?

Yes. The chest circumference to body volume relationship is consistent across cattle and buffaloes. Mature breeding bulls usually weigh between 600 kg and 900 kg depending on breed.

How do I calculate dewormer dose from this weight?

Most broad-spectrum cattle deworming boluses (Albendazole or Fenbendazole) recommend 5 to 7.5 mg active drug per kg body weight. For a 400 kg animal, 400 × 7.5 mg = 3,000 mg (one 3 g bolus). Always verify the product leaflet or consult your veterinary officer.
