Planning to build or expand a modern dairy shed? Enter the number of cows, buffaloes, calves and bulls in your herd. This calculator works out the exact covered roof area (m² and sq ft), open paddock area, manger (feed trough) length and water trough size according to Indian loose-housing standards.
About the Dairy Shed Size Calculator
Modern Indian dairy farms follow the loose-housing system (Bureau of Indian Standards IS:12237 / NDDB guidelines). Animals remain untied in an open paddock with free access to a covered roofed shed, a continuous feeding manger, and clean drinking water 24 hours a day.
Loose housing improves milk yield by 10–15%, reduces mastitis and joint swellings, cuts down labor required for dung cleaning, and allows natural heat detection.
Standard space requirements per animal
| Animal Type | Covered Area | Open Paddock | Manger Space |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adult Cow | 3.5 m² (38 sq ft) | 7.0 m² (75 sq ft) | 60–75 cm |
| Adult Buffalo | 4.0 m² (43 sq ft) | 8.0 m² (86 sq ft) | 60–75 cm |
| Young Calf (<3 months) | 1.0 m² (11 sq ft) | 2.0 m² (22 sq ft) | 40–50 cm |
| Older Calf / Heifer | 2.0 m² (22 sq ft) | 4.0 m² (43 sq ft) | 40–50 cm |
| Breeding Bull | 12.0 m² (130 sq ft) | 24.0 m² (260 sq ft) | 80–100 cm |
| Calving Pen | 12.0 m² (130 sq ft) | 12.0 m² (130 sq ft) | Separate manger |
Shed orientation and drainage rules
- East-to-West roof ridge: In tropical Indian conditions, orient the long side East to West so the roof blocks the harsh southern sun and keeps animals shaded throughout the day.
- Roof height: 10–12 feet at the eaves and 14–16 feet at the ridge for excellent natural cross-ventilation.
- Floor slope: 1:40 (1 inch slope per 3.3 feet) towards the rear drainage channel to ensure quick urine runoff and dry resting floors.
How to use the Dairy Shed Size Calculator
- 1 Enter your herd counts: adult cows, buffaloes, young calves, older heifers, and bulls.
- 2 Press Calculate to see the exact covered and open areas in both square metres and square feet.
- 3 Check the required manger length to ensure every animal can feed simultaneously without fighting.
- 4 Review the recommended calving pens and water trough dimensions.
Quick visual guide
The formula we use
Covered Area (m²) = (Cows × 3.5) + (Buffaloes × 4.0) + (Calves × 1.0) + (Heifers × 2.0) + (Bulls × 12.0) + (Calving Pens × 12.0)
Open Yard (m²) = (Cows × 7.0) + (Buffaloes × 8.0) + (Calves × 2.0) + (Heifers × 4.0) + (Bulls × 24.0) + (Calving Pens × 12.0)
Area in Square Feet = Area (m²) × 10.7639
Manger Length (m) = (Adults × 0.65 m) + (Calves × 0.45 m)Worked example
A dairy farmer plans a 10-cow farm with 4 young calves and 2 older heifers:
- Covered area: 10 cows × 3.5 = 35 m²; calves = 4 × 1.0 = 4 m²; heifers = 2 × 2.0 = 4 m²; 1 calving pen = 12 m². Total covered = 55 m² (592 sq ft).
- Open yard: 10 cows × 7.0 = 70 m²; calves = 8 m²; heifers = 8 m²; calving yard = 12 m². Total open = 98 m² (1,055 sq ft).
- Total land needed for the herd: 55 + 98 = 153 m² (1,647 sq ft).
- Manger length: 10 adults × 0.65 m + 6 calves × 0.45 m = 9.2 metres (30 feet).
Things to keep in mind
- Room for expansion: Most successful dairy farmers add 20–30% more animals within 2 to 3 years. Leave open space at one end of the shed for future extension.
- Feed storage & silage pit: Allocate an extra 20–25% area outside the animal shed for a dry bhusa godown, concentrate feed room, and silage pit.
- Flooring texture: Groove the concrete floor in a 4-inch diamond pattern to prevent cows slipping and suffering hip injuries.
Frequently asked questions
How much area does a 10-cow dairy farm need?
For 10 adult cows with followers (calves), you need approximately 550–600 sq ft of covered shed and 1,000–1,100 sq ft of open paddock, totaling roughly 1,600–1,800 sq ft (about 2 gunthas or 1.5 biswa). Adding feed store and milk room brings the total footprint to about 2,200 sq ft.
Why do buffaloes need more space than cows?
Adult buffaloes are heavier, have larger barrel girth, and dissipate heat less efficiently through their black skin and fewer sweat glands. They need at least 4.0 m² covered and 8.0 m² open area.
Why is loose housing better than tied (stanchion) sheds?
In loose housing, cattle walk freely, drink water whenever thirsty, exhibit clear estrus signs, and show 15–20% fewer claw and leg disorders. Labor required for cleaning and feeding is also significantly lower.
How much manger space should I build per cow?
Allow 60 to 75 cm (2 to 2.5 feet) of feeding manger per adult animal so that all animals can eat fodder together without bullying or pushing weaker cows away.
