Fertilizer Calculators

Fertilizer Requirement Calculator

Find the quantity of any fertilizer – straight, complex or water-soluble – from the nutrient dose and its percentage.

Enter your details

The dose of the nutrient you are supplying with this product – for example 30 kg P₂O₅ per acre.

Printed on the bag. In 10:26:26, P₂O₅ is 26%.

Please note: This calculator provides a mathematical estimate based on the values entered. Recommended agricultural application rates can vary by crop, soil, product formulation, location and official agricultural guidance. Check the product label and local agricultural recommendations before application.

Using a complex fertilizer like 10:26:26, 12:32:16 or 20:20:0:13, or something less common such as ammonium sulphate or SOP? Enter the nutrient you need and that nutrient's percentage on the bag, and this calculator tells you how much product to apply.

About the Fertilizer Requirement Calculator

Every fertilizer bag sold in India carries its grade – a string of numbers giving the percentage of N, P2O5, K2O and sometimes sulphur or zinc. Once you know the percentage of the nutrient you care about, the maths is always the same:

Product needed = Nutrient needed × 100 ÷ Nutrient %

This calculator applies that rule to any product, so it works for the grades our dedicated calculators don't cover: NPK complexes (10:26:26, 12:32:16, 19:19:19, 20:20:0:13), ammonium sulphate (20.6% N), calcium ammonium nitrate (25% N), SOP (50% K2O), zinc sulphate (21% or 33% Zn) and water-soluble fertilizers for fertigation.

Working with complex fertilizers

A complex fertilizer supplies several nutrients at once, but in fixed proportions that rarely match your recommendation exactly. The usual approach is:

  1. Calculate the complex based on the nutrient that is the limiting one – usually phosphorus.
  2. Work out how much of the other nutrients it supplies (multiply the product quantity by each percentage).
  3. Top up whatever is still short with straight fertilizers – urea for N, MOP for K2O.

The worked example below shows this step by step.

How to use the Fertilizer Requirement Calculator

  1. 1 Enter your field area.
  2. 2 Enter the dose of one nutrient – the one you are planning around, usually P2O5 for complexes.
  3. 3 Enter that nutrient's percentage from the bag grade.
  4. 4 Press Calculate. Then multiply the product quantity by the other percentages on the bag to see what else you have supplied.

The formula we use

Total nutrient (kg) = Dose × Area
Fertilizer (kg) = Total nutrient × 100 ÷ Nutrient %
Other nutrients supplied (kg) = Fertilizer × their % ÷ 100

Common grades for reference:

Always go by the grade printed on your bag – formulations can differ slightly between manufacturers.

Worked example

Your recommendation for 2 acres is 40 kg N, 30 kg P2O5 and 30 kg K2O per acre, and you want to use 10:26:26.

  1. Plan around phosphorus: total P2O5 = 30 × 2 = 60 kg.
  2. 10:26:26 needed = 60 × 100 ÷ 26 = 230.8 kg (about 4.6 bags).
  3. That also supplies K2O = 230.8 × 26% = 60 kg (exactly your requirement) and N = 230.8 × 10% = 23.1 kg.
  4. Nitrogen still needed = 80 − 23.1 = 56.9 kg, which you can supply as 56.9 ÷ 0.46 = 123.7 kg of urea using the Urea Calculator.

Things to keep in mind

  • Pick the right nutrient to plan around. If you plan a complex around nitrogen, you often end up with far too much phosphorus. Phosphorus is usually the safest anchor.
  • Check the whole grade. Look at every number on the bag, including sulphur and zinc, and count them in your plan.
  • Water-soluble fertilizers used in drip systems are often dosed per day or per week. Enter the dose for that period.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula to calculate fertilizer quantity?

Fertilizer (kg) = nutrient needed (kg) × 100 ÷ nutrient percentage in the fertilizer. For example, 30 kg of P2O5 from a 26% product needs 30 × 100 ÷ 26 = 115.4 kg.

How much 10:26:26 should I use per acre?

It depends on your phosphorus and potash dose. For 25 kg P2O5 per acre you would need 25 × 100 ÷ 26 = 96 kg (about 2 bags) of 10:26:26. Always start from your recommendation.

Can I use this for micronutrients like zinc sulphate?

Yes. For zinc sulphate monohydrate (33% Zn), a dose of 5 kg Zn needs 5 × 100 ÷ 33 = 15.2 kg of product. Use the zinc percentage printed on your bag.

Why don't complex fertilizers match my recommendation exactly?

Complexes have fixed ratios. Recommendations are tailored to each crop and soil. It is normal to use a complex for the base dose and adjust with straight fertilizers like urea and MOP.

Does it work for organic manures?

In principle, yes, if you know the nutrient content – for example, well-rotted FYM is often around 0.5% N. But organic manures vary a lot, so treat the result as a rough guide.
